Richland High School Senior Receives Full Scholarship to Ivy League University of Pennsylvania

Lutfi Awad has dreams of one day becoming a pediatric surgeon. Throughout his childhood, he has always wanted to make a difference in the future generation.

The Richland High School senior’s dreams are now one step closer to being reality after a simple email informed him he had not only been accepted into the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania – he had also received a full scholarship.

“I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw the email,” Lutfi recalled. “When I told my mom, she just started crying. This means a lot for me, but it also means a lot for my family. Helping my family with the financial cost of college was super important to me.”

Lutfi is the second Birdville ISD student to receive the prestigious QuestBridge Match Scholarship, which will provide him with a full four-year scholarship valued at more than $320,000. The University of Pennsylvania is among the most selective QuestBridge partner universities, known globally for its top-tier research opportunities and strong academic programs.

Lutfi was one of only 2,550 finalists from across the United States recognized with this tremendous achievement.

“We are extremely proud of Lutfi for this remarkable accomplishment,” said Dr. Nathan Frymark, Richland High School principal. “Lutfi is a very personable, outgoing and hard-working student. He is involved in many leadership roles, including student council and National Honor Society. This scholarship is a true testament to his work ethic, and this award is incredibly well deserved.”

The Match Scholarship provides high-achieving students full four-year scholarships to some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. Students who receive these scholarships demonstrate they are prepared to excel in college and beyond. The Match Scholarship removes financial barriers and allows students to focus fully on their academic and career goals.

Lutfi plans to major in biochemistry before pursuing medical school to become a pediatric surgeon.

“I just love making an impact on children’s lives,” Lutfi said. “That is my passion. If I can make that impact through physically helping them as a surgeon, that is perfect for me. I am so grateful for this opportunity. This is a blessing. It really is.”
