Eight Birdville ISD Students Earn Prestigious National Merit Recognition

Eight Birdville ISD students have earned one of the most distinguished academic achievements in the United States and now carry the designation as National Merit Scholars.

Birdville ISD is proud to recognize Emma Pitner of Birdville High School for being named a National Merit Finalist. As a finalist, Emma is now eligible to compete for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, totaling nearly $30 million. In addition to potential scholarship awards, National Merit Finalists often receive significant college scholarship packages, honors program invitations, and recruitment opportunities from universities across the country, recognizing their exceptional academic achievement and leadership potential.

Seven additional students have been named National Merit Commended Scholars, including: Ijeoma (Crystal) Acho (Birdville High School), Hannah Anderson (Richland High School), Logan Kisling (Haltom High School), Cooper Maberry (Birdville High School), Finnegan Morgan (Birdville High School), Oliver Morgan (Richland High School), and Angel Ruiz Rodriguez (Birdville High School).

“We are incredibly proud of these eight students for earning recognition through the National Merit Scholarship Program – an achievement that reflects not only their academic excellence, but also their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to learning,” said Dr. Elizabeth Clark, Associate Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Accountability.

The National Merit Scholarship Program identifies top-performing students based on Selection Index scores derived from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which measures Evidence-Based Reading, Writing, and Math skills. Of the approximately 1.3 million students who take the PSAT/NMSQT annually, only 50,000 earn recognition. Less than 34,000 students are named Commended Scholars, which places them among the top academic performers nationwide.

National Merit Commended Scholars can receive merit-based scholarships, honor college opportunities and more. These honors reflect not only exceptional academic achievement but also dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence that extends beyond the classroom.

Of those who earn the designation of Commended Scholar, roughly 16,000 students are named semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. After completing a rigorous application process that includes submitting academic records, leadership and activity involvement, an essay, and confirming SAT or ACT scores, only about 15,000 students advance to become National Merit Finalists.

“This distinction places our Birdville ISD students among the most accomplished students in the nation and is a testament to the vital partnership between families and schools,” Clark said. “We are deeply grateful for the parents who have supported and encouraged their children every step of the way, as well as the teachers who have guided, challenged, and inspired these students throughout their journey. Their accomplishments represent the very best of our district and serve as an inspiration to all as we celebrate the bright futures that lie ahead.”
